Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is an escape room and how does it work?
An escape room is a live, interactive adventure in which your team works together to solve puzzles, uncover clues and complete a mission before time runs out. Each Escape Reading room has its own story, challenges and objectives, and you will usually have 60 minutes to complete your adventure.
Is it difficult?
Our escape rooms are designed to be challenging but enjoyable for beginners and experienced players alike. Success depends on teamwork, communication and observation rather than specialist knowledge.
What if we get stuck? Can we ask for clues?
Of course. Getting stuck is part of the experience. Our game hosts monitor every game and can provide hints that point you in the right direction without giving away the entire solution.
How long does an escape room last?
Most games last up to 60 minutes. We recommend allowing around 90 minutes for your visit, including arrival, the game briefing and post-game photos.
Do we need previous experience?
Not at all. Many of our players are visiting an escape room for the first time, and our games are designed to be enjoyed by beginners as well as experienced players.
Is it scary?
Our rooms are designed to provide a thrilling mystery and team experience rather than a scare attraction. Vampire Slayers is the only room that includes jump scares.
What should we wear?
We recommend comfortable clothing and footwear. You will not need special equipment, but you may be moving around and searching the room for clues.
Can I use my phone inside the room?
No. Phones and other electronic devices are not permitted during the game. This protects the puzzles and helps everyone enjoy the immersive experience.
How many rooms do you have?
We currently have five escape rooms across two Reading locations. Visit our rooms page to explore the available games.

Families

Are escape rooms suitable for children and families?
Yes. Escape rooms are a fun family activity that encourages teamwork, communication and problem-solving. Children often notice clues that adults miss, so every family member can contribute. Explore our guide to family activities in Reading for more ideas and advice.
What age can children play?
We recommend our rooms for ages 12 and over for the best experience. Any team that includes players aged 14 or under must have at least one adult aged 18 or over inside the room. Please contact us if you need help choosing the most suitable game.
Which room is best for families?
The best choice depends on the ages and experience of your group. Contact our team and we will recommend a suitable room for your family.
Can grandparents play too?
Of course. Escape rooms are often enjoyed by grandparents, parents and children playing together. Success relies on teamwork and different perspectives rather than physical ability.
Are escape rooms a good birthday activity?
Yes. An escape room gives friends and family a shared, interactive experience and is a memorable alternative to a traditional birthday celebration.

Groups & Team Building

Are escape rooms good for team building?
Yes. Escape rooms encourage communication, collaboration, leadership and problem-solving under pressure, making them an engaging team-building activity.
Can large groups play?
Yes. We can split larger groups across multiple rooms and run games simultaneously. Our Queens Walk rooms can accommodate up to 21 players and our Audley Street rooms up to 13 players. Please contact us so we can plan the best arrangement for your group.
Can we split into teams and compete?
Absolutely. Larger groups can divide into smaller teams and play simultaneously, competing to see which team escapes first or achieves the best result.
Do you host corporate events?
Yes. We welcome businesses from Reading, Berkshire and the Thames Valley for team building, staff socials, client entertainment and corporate celebrations. See our team-building options or contact us to discuss your event.
How many players can we have in each room?
Capacity varies by room: Kidnapped has a maximum of 7 players, Blown Away 8, Vampire Slayers 6, Ram Raid 7 and Age of Magic 6. For the best experience, we may recommend a smaller team depending on the game.
Can I bring extra people to play?
Please contact us as soon as possible. Extra players can usually be added and the price difference paid on arrival, provided the room's maximum capacity is not exceeded.

Bookings

How far in advance should I book?
Game dates are released four months in advance. We recommend booking early, particularly for weekends, school holidays and other peak periods.
Can I change, cancel or reschedule my booking?
Bookings cannot be cancelled or refunded once a session is booked. You can reschedule free of charge when you give us at least five days' notice, subject to availability.
Someone has dropped out. Can I have a refund?
Escape Reading is a live, ticketed event, so we cannot issue a refund when a player drops out after the booking has been made.
Are bookings private or will strangers join our game?
All bookings are private. Only you and your group will be in the room.
Can I arrive and play without a booking?
You are welcome to visit the venue, but games are subject to availability. We strongly recommend booking online or calling us in advance to avoid disappointment.
What if I'm late?
Please allow plenty of time for travel and parking. If another team has booked the next time slot, arriving late will reduce the time available for your game.

Safety, Access & Locations

Are the rooms locked?
No. For safety, the entrance door is never locked and you can leave at any time. Your dedicated game host monitors the whole experience and is available if you need help.
Can I leave during the game?
Yes. You can leave if needed and our staff will assist you. Please be aware that leaving certain games may mean that your game has to end.
Can players with claustrophobia participate?
Many people with mild claustrophobia play without difficulty. Our rooms are immersive adventures rather than confined spaces, the entrance is not locked and you can leave at any time. Contact us before booking if you would like details about a specific room.
Are the rooms wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately, none of our rooms are currently suitable for wheelchair access.
